Rule on the Bridge
The new Bennett Bridge was a long time coming (and still is). While five lanes will help move traffic along, the real issue still remains Highway 97 itself. Traffic control lights need to be coordinated to allow smooth flow-through. Some intersections should not have left turns, and those that do need proper left hand turn lanes and lights. This will take coordination between provincial highway authorities and our municipal traffic team.
Sometime in the next ten to fifteen years we will still require a second crossing, and it is important to build that into our planning now to allow land acquisition for the "landing" spot.
The proposed bike and pedestrian lanes for the bridge appear to be adequate, although somewhat unconventional being combined together on one side of the bridge. It is unfortunate that cyclists and pedestrians will have to cross the flow of traffic on the west side of the bridge at the Campbell Interchange. There doesn't appear to be any accomodation for the new BRT (Bus Rapid Transit).

Just read your statement re. coordinating traffic lites. As seen in a recent letter to the editor, the quality computer system that is presently able to handle light problems is being replaced with expensive tax-payer contributions. Remember, as long as the distance between the lights is unequal it is next to impossible to provide a good timing of the lights. Why don't you press for a fair study of the raised highway concept? Look at www.xpressway97.com and see what a practical idea this is! The present bridge builder is constructing this concept in Canada and calls it a fast rail system. To SNC-Lavalin the continuation of the Bennett bridge to Gordon Drive is a no brainer!
Thank you Llyod, I will always insist on informing neighbourhoods about changes in their area - it is common courtesy and goes a long way to developing a relationship of trust and respect.
Thanks for your comments!

Michelle...........a lot has happned in the last 8 months. Has the youth advisory group to the Mayor been given an opportinity to give their opinion re. the highway 97 changes being promoted by City Council? The west side students spent considerable time creating a display that incorporated a few of the ideas related to www.xpressway97.com Have the advisory group been asked to talk to their peers and bring a report to Council?
